Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam

Beautiful Malayalam comedy movie “Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam” (1986) directed by Sathyan Anthikad and starring Mohanlal, Karthika, Sreenivasan among others.

Its another script of comedy and tragedy around the scourge of indebtedness, poverty, lack of opportunities in a supposedly egalitarian society that is Kerala.

Gopalakrishna Pannicker (Mohanlal) is having to pay the old debts incurred by his late father and has the family property being auctioned off to pay off the debts. He has a small house in town, which has been given on rent and which he can sell off and pay the debts.

But the residents of that house Meera (Karthika) and her family comprising of mother KPAC Lalitha, and one small brother and sister are themselves struggling to eke out a living on her meagre salary. They are reluctant to vacate the house as they are paying rent regularly.

Mohanlal tries his best to make them vacate the house and they try their best not to do so. Many comic scenes ensue as a result of that. Complexities arise towards the end of the script, when the tragic situation emerges. The helplessness and hopelessness of a honest citizen in the face of daunting challenges is beautifully brought about by a powerful script with superb dialogues.

Both Mohanlal and Karthika act very well and so do the other character actors KPAC Lalitha, Sreenivasan, Sukumari (she is legendary) Mamukoya, Sankaradi, Innocent etc. This is a landmark comedy movie which has spawned many copies in other languages like Tamil, Telugu, Hindi etc. Sathyad Anthikad has once again proven his mettle in directing classic movies. IMDB 7/10
