Beautiful Malayalam comedy movie “Gandhinagar 2nd Street” (1986) directed by Sathyan Anthikad and starring Mohanlal, Karthika, Seema, Sreenivasan, Thilakan among others.
Many of these movies in the 80s highlighted the problem of unemployment amongst the educated youth in Kerala, the stark poverty, the lack of any employment opportunities, depression amongst the youth etc. in a very subtle manner.
Sethu (Mohanlal) is one such youth desperate for a job somehow. He lands up a job as a Nepali security guard in a residential colony. Having recently come to the colony is Maya (Karthika) who used to be Sethu’s love interest once upon a time, until he was foolishly asked by his friends to take her to a hotel room alone.
Also staying singly in the colony with her son is Nirmala (Seema) whose husband is in the Gulf. Loose tongues galore when they see Nirmala and Sethu together few times. Sethu’s love story gets a second lease of life but there are problems to be surmounted.
Enough gags in the early part of the movie for comic relief and then the story gets serious towards the latter part. Nice tight script with good acting by all including Mohanlal, Karthika, Seema, Thilakan, Innocent, Sankarady, Sukumari etc. with a surprise element thrown in towards the end. IMDB 6/10
